Family diversity
Diversity of cultural background, differences in family characteristics and structure, and circumstantial or situational differences, resulting in diverse languages, economic situation, customs, attitudes, behaviors, and values
Community
All who are interested in and affected by the quality of education, not just those with children in the schools
Family involvement
Encompasses all interactions between school and home that supports student achievement; similar terms are family/school partnership and a home/school relationships
Parent
Anyone who carries out the responsibilities of a caregiver for a child
Technical jargon
Terms or acronyms understood by educators but not likely to be understood by parents or those outside of education
Types of involvement
Parents may participate in school involvement at one of the six levels;
- Basic obligations of parenting
- Communication
- Volunteering
- Learning activities at home
- Decision making and advocacy
- Community collaboration
