Chapter 1.2: Scientific Inquiry Flashcards
Science
A way of knowing about or understanding the natural world - observing, experimenting, and explaining concepts based on predictions
Inquiry
The search for information and explanations of natural phenomena
Critical thinking
Objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgement
Observation
The act of perceiving using the senses
Qualitative data
Descriptions, how it looks, smells, feels, sounds
Quantitative data
Numerical measurements organized into tables and graphs
Inductive reasoning
Deriving generalizations from a large number of specific observations
Hypothesis
Explanation based on observations and assumptions that leads to a testable prediction
Deductive reasoning
Using general premises to make specific predictions
Controlled experiment
Experimental group is compared with a control group
Variables
Features or quantities that vary in an experiment
Independent variable
Variable that is manipulated by the researchers
Dependent variables
Variable predicted to be affected in response to
Experimental group
Group exposed to the independent variable
Control group
Group for comparison that is not exposed to experimental variable
Theory
Broader than hypothesis, leads to new hypotheses, supported by much evidence
Statistical significance
Results that are statistically unlikely to have occurred by chance
