Chapter 12: Considerations for Clients with Obesity Flashcards
Wellness
Dynamic processes of realizing one’s full potential in many aspects of life.
Type 2 diabetes
Most common form of diabetes; typically develops in adulthood and is characterized by a reduced sensitivity of the insulin target cells to available insulin; usually associated with obesity; formerly known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and adult-onset diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes
Form of diabetes caused by the destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, which leads
to little or no insulin secretion; generally develops in childhood and requires regular insulin injections; formerly known as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and childhood-onset diabetes.
Obesogenic
An environment that tends to generate or create a state of obesity.
Insulin Sensitivity
The degree of sensitivity of a receptor site on a tissue cellar insulin. it functions to allow glucose to enter the cell.
Negative Feedback Loop
A bodily reaction that causes a decrease in function because of some kind of stimulus.
Triglycerides
three fatty acids joined to a glycerol backbone.
Homeostasis
An internal state of physiological balance.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
A condition in which breathing stops for more than 10 seconds during sleep due to part of the airway being closed off while a person is trying to inhale during sleep/
Resting Metabolic Rate
The number of calories expended per unit time at rest.
Resting Energy Expenditure
The amount of energy expended at rest. this is 60 - 75% of the total energy expenditure.
Total Energy Expenditure
The amount of energy expended in 24 hours of time. it is made up of basal metabolism, physical activity, and thermogenesis from the diet.
Non-exercise activity thermogenesis
Physiological processes that produce heat.
Osteoarthritis
A degenerative disease involving a wearing away of joint cartilage.
Bariatric Surgery
A variety of surgical procedures that induce losing weight.
