Chapter 11 - Hormones Flashcards
what are endocrine glands
The places in the body where hormones are made and secreted
Where do hormones travel
the blood
What are target organs
the organs that the specific hormone targets
What is the endocrine system
all of the endocrine glands
What is produced in the thyroid
thyroxine
what is thyroxine
regulates the heart rate, rate of metabolism ad temperature
What is produced in the adrenal gland
adrenaline
what is adrenaline
prepares the body for a fight or flight scenario
What is produced in the pancreas
insulin
what is insulin
it controls the body’s blood glucose levels
What is produced in the testes
testosterone
what is testosterone
it controls puberty and stimulates sperm production
What is produced in the ovaries
oestrogen
what is oestrogen
causes the lining of the uterus to grow, it also stimulates the release of LH and inhibits the release of FSH
what are the endocrine glands
Thyroid, pituitary gland, Testes, Ovaries, pancreas, adrenal gland
What are the differences between hormones and nerves
- nerves have faster actions than hormones
- nerves act for a short time and hormones act longer
- nerves act in a precise area unlike hormones who act in a general way
what happens to excess glucose
it is stored as glycogen
where is glycogen held
in the muscles and the liver
how does insulin work
it reduces the glucose concentration in the blood by directing some glucose into the liver and converting glucose into glycogen
what happens if the blood glucose levels are too low
glucagon is secreted
what happens if the blood glucose levels are too high
insulin is secreted
how does glucagon work
it increases the glucose concentration in the blood by turning the glycogen in the liver in glucose and allowing the glucose to flow in the blood stream
where is glucagon produced
pancreas
what can a person with diabetes not do
control their blood sugar levels
what is type 1 diabetes
where the pancreas does not produce enough insulin so they cannot control the amount of glucose in the blood
what is insulin therapy
where a person receives several injections a day of insulin to make sure that glucose is removed from the blood before food is digested
What is type 2 diabetes
where a person becomes resistant to their own insulin
What can increase a persons chances of gaining type 2 diabetes
being overweight
