Chapter 11 - Electro Chemistry Flashcards
Oxidizing agent
Causes another Atom to undergo oxidation and is itself reduced
Reducing agent
Causes another Atom to be reduced it is oxidized
Common oxidizing agent
Typically contain oxygen
Common reducing agent
Typically contains metal ions or hydrides(H-)
Oxidation number
Assigned to Adams to keep track of redistribution of electrons
Balanced oxidation numbers
The sum of the oxidation numbers of all Adams present in a neutral compound is zero
Half reaction method of balancing oxidation reactions
Each item that is oxidized or reduced is given its own half reaction. These reactions are first determined, and then combined and balanced
Spectator ion
An ion that is not taken up in the reaction and who’s oxidation state is not changed
Net ionic equation
Shows only the species that are actually oxidized a reduced in the reaction
Disproportionation reactions
Atoms oxidation state changes to two different oxidation states
Oxidation reduction titration
The measure of the complete reaction of a reacting in at redox reaction
