Where did outburst of machine breaking first begin and why?
- Nottinghamshire in 1811
- due to machine breaking outburst due to a group of men who believed that machinery begin used in textile industry was depriving them from their livelihood
Where does the name Luddite come from ?
Comes from a mythical figure called Ned Ludd
How did the Luddite activity spread ?
The activity spread by a series of riots and spread of machine breaking to Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire
What were the aims and motives of Luddite activity ?
To get job security and a petition for the minimum wage bill
What historical debate is there about Luddite activity ?
- Frank Darval thought the unrest was the response of uneducated men who saw the machines as a threat
- Edward Palmer Thompson argue that the luddites had a tendency towards becoming a revolutionary movement
How did the government respond to Luddite activity?
Lots of trials and arrest and used local malisha to put down this riots
Who was William Wilbeforce ?
He was an enlightened rationalist and philanthropic reformer
Used his sit in parliament to fight for the abolition of slavery

He was a radical agitator and a Whig
Imprisoned for his participation in the peterloo massacre

He was an individualist radical and launched his political register in 1802
Why did the working class agitation subside in the early 1820s ?
Subsided with the recovery of the economy
Why did working class agitation increase ?
Due to another sudden slump that led to outbreaks of violence among agriculture labourers in rural south of England
Similarities between middle class and working class agitators?
Bringing an end to aristocratic dominance of the political system
Difference between middle class and working class agitators?
Middle class prefers to agitate for change through persuasion and rational argument
Working class agitated for more opportunities such as employment and equal education + better working conditions
What was the anti slavery movement ?
The campaign for the abolition of slavery began in the 1770s led by evangelical Christian who argues that slavery was both un - Christian and un- British
Economic benefits of slavery?
Lots of people profited form the slave trade
Plantation owners amassed huge fortunes by using slaves to grow , harvest and process crop like sugar
