Chapter 10 New Testament Flashcards
Alexander the Great
Conquered all of what we know as the Middle East. Empire extended from Greece to India. He died young, and everything went to his generals. The only ones we care about are Ptolemy and Seleucus
Ptolemy
He ruled areas north of Africa (Egypt primarily) They contained control until 198 BCE when they lost the region north of Saudi Arabia to the Seleucids.
Rome
Rome was very powerful but only interviened if they had to.
Antiochus (Ephiphanes)
This guy took power in 175 BCE and wanted money. He ran into Jason and made the deal with him
Jason
Jason was the bro of a higher preist in Jerusalem. (Judea) and he made a deal with Antiochus that pissed off the Jews. Jason would become the priest and have power but then he would hellanize Judea. This obviously made everyone in Jerusalem mad and led them to the civil war
Civil war in Judea
Antiochus attacked Egypt (the ptolemies) because he needed more money (even after the deal with Jason) but Rome stepped in and shut that down. In 167, Antiochus got in there and shut down the Jews worshiping anything but Greek.
Jonathan
Jonathan was the guy who was able t let Jews have religious freedom and allowed Judas to retain power. Soon war broke out and Judas was killed. Then Jonathan was killed by the Seleucid king because he was so powerful (143)
Selucies
They had control east of Ptolemy’s territory. Continued the hellanization (just like the Ptolemys)
Sadduces
Did not believe in afterlife and took the Hebrew Bible very Literal
Pharasies
Believed in an after life. They would interpret the bible rather than look at it in a literal meaning
Essenees
In the beginning they were a separatist group that eventually got more and more followers.
