Chapter 10; Hormonal and Reproductive Drugs Flashcards
Hormonal Drugs: Insuline
regular acting insuline, Humulin R
Short acting
Cats and Dogs
Emergency - diabetic ketoacidosis
IV
Not for long term use
100 U/mL syringe
Hormonal Drugs: Insulin
Caninsulin
Intermediate acting
Cats and dogs - BID SC dosing
40 U/mL syringe
Hormonal Drugs: Insulin
glargine (Lantus)
Ultralong acting
Cats
BID SC dosing
100 U/mL syringe
Hormonal Drugs: Insulin Overdose
Hypoglycemia
Lethargy
Weakness
Ataxia
Seizures
TX: food, corn syrup on gums and veterinary support care
Hormonal Drugs: glypizide
Oral hypolycemic drug - stimulates pancreas to produce insulin
Cats
Hormonal Drugs: Hypothyriodism
levothyroxine
Thyriod hormone supplement
Oral tablets
Lifelong therapy
Serum T4 monitoring required
Hormonal Drugs: Hyperthyriodism
I-131 (radioactive iodine isotope)
Destroys the hyperactive thyriod tissue
Premanent results
Carp Road Animal Hospital
Hormonal Drugs: Hyperthyriodism
methimazole
Interferes with incorporation of iodide into T4/T3
Trandermal gel (compunded)
Oral Tablet - Felimazole (vet aprroved), Tapazole
BID - lifelong therapy
Regular moinitoring of serum levels
Side effect: vomiting, anorexia, pruritus
Can worsen pre-existing renal disease
Hormonal Drugs: Hyperadrenocorticism Crushing’s Disease
mitotane
Causes adrenal necrosis
Oral tablet for dogs
Loading dose (induction period) then weekly doses
Insecticide drug, related to DDT
Side effect: vomiting diarrhea, anorexia, Addison’s disease
Hormonal Drugs: Hyperadrenocorticism Crushing’s Disease
trilostane (Vetoryl)
Reversible inhibition of cortisol production
Dogs
Oral capsule given SID
Side effect: GI effects, anorexia and occasional Addion’s
Hormonal Drugs: Hypoadrenocorticism Addison’s Disease
fludrocortison (Florinef)
Mineralocorticoid and glucocorticiod effects
Oral tablets - daily
Monitor electrolytes (Na and K)
Side effect: PU, PD, PP if dose too high
Hormonal Drugs: Hypoadrenocorticism Addison’s Disease
desoxycorticosterone pivalate (DOCP)(Precorten-V)
Long acting mineralocorticoid
No glucocorticoid activity
Used in conjunction with glucocorticoid - prednisone or prednisolone
Injectable suspension IM (q 25 days)
Monitor electrolytes (Na and K)
Side effect: PU, PD if dose roo high, irriation at injection site
Reproductive Drugs: Progestrone The “Gests”
Produced by the CL after ovulation
Used by cattle breeders to synchronize breeding and birth cycles
Used in combination with prostaglandin to reset the cow’s physiological clock
E.g. PRID - progesterone releasing intravaginal device
Reproductive Drugs: Prostaglandin The “Prosts”
Many groups of prostaglandins produced ny different tissues in the body
Prostaglandin F2-aplha is naturally produced in the uterus - causes lysis of the CL, initiation of new estrus cycle
E.g. cloprostenol (Estrumate)
Synthetic prostaglandin (PGF2-alpha)
Estrus synchronization to lyse the CL - all cattle will cycle at the same time
Side effect: absorbed through the skin - uterine contraction in pregnant women, bronchoconstriction
Reproductive Drugs: Gonadotrophins
GnRH (Factrel) - synthetic gonadotropin
Causes the release of FSH and LH
Used in cattle to treat follicular cysts and for estrus synchronization
FSH - promote supervulation in cattle - embryo collection and transfer
