Q

What are the five major beliefs of naturopathy

A
  1. Disease is a natural part of nature
    - disease is viewed as a natural part of nature and is caused by a violation of nature’s laws
-when healthy functioning is disturbed, the naturopathic belief is that disease will result in humans just as it does in the plant and animal kingdoms

2.Promote health and prevent disease
-Prevention of disease is another major belief in naturopathy. Naturopathic practitioners or physicians work on promoting health to prevent disease.11 They encourage patients to be responsible for their own health by living healthy lifestyles.

  1. The body will heal itself
-body is its own best healer and knows what it needs to get well or heal itself.
-symptoms are viewed as the body trying to purify itself
-In naturopathy, the cause of the symptoms (problem) is investigated and diagnosed before treatment is prescribed, which would include treating the patient in a holistic and natural fashion
  2. Germs are not the major cause of disease
    - They do not believe that pathogens or germs are the main cause of disease. They believe that disease is caused by several other phenomena that could include the actions of “toxins” food allergies; dietary sugar, fat, and gluten; inadequate vitamin and mineral intake; vertebral misalignments; imbalances of qi energy; and a few others.
-all chronic (long-lasting) diseases are viewed as the result of continued suppression of the same acute diseases or from self-initiated attempts at body cleansing.
  3. First, do no harm
    - naturopathic physician uses methods and substances that are as nontoxic and noninvasive as possible.

Q

Lipid ring or ring of determination

A

is a heavy white ring partially or completely covering the outer edge of the iris. This ring is mostly found in older people, and it may be indicative of arteriosclerosis and other cardiovascular problems. It may also indicate problems with the liver and thyroid and an increased risk of Parkinson’s disease.

Q

Lymphatic Rosary or Ring of Harmony

A

ooks like a tiny ring of clouds around the outer iris. People with this ring may have lymphatic congestion and swollen lymph nodes

21
Q

True or False: there is no scientific evidence that iridology should be used for diagnostic purposes

A

true

22
Q

Mineral analysis

A

-may analyze hair for trace mineral content

23
Q

Bioresonance

A

-the practice of using an electronic device to measure the bodys electromagnetic radiation and electric currents
-The theory is that damaged organs and cancer cells emit electromagnetic oscillations that are different from healthy cells and that a Bioresonance device can detect this information

24
Q

Kirlian Photography Diagnosis

A

-colourful photographs of images surrounding the body and within the body are made after applying high-frequency electrical currents to a patient’s body

25
Q

True or false: naturopaths believe that the key to successful treatment is in balancing four major body

A

true

26
Q

What are the four major body systems

A

the immune system, the elimination (or detoxification) system, the nervous system, and the hormonal system

27
Q

hydrotherapy

A

the treatment of physical disability, injury, or illness by immersion of all or part of the body in water to facilitate movement, promote wound healing, and relieve pain. It is usually done under the supervision of a trained therapist

28
Q

Three main categories of naturopathic practitioners

A
  1. Traditional naturopath
    2.Healthcare providers
  2. Naturopathic physician
29
Q

Traditional naturopath

A

-The traditional naturopath does not have a university undergraduate or higher education degree.
-can obtain training through distance learning (correspondence or Internet courses).
-They may not prescribe drugs, X-rays, or surgery.
The programs are not accredited by organizations recognized for accreditation purposes by the U.S. Department of Education and are not subject to licensing.

30
Q

Healthcare providers

A

The second category is composed of medical doctors, osteopathic doctors, chiropractors, and nurses who pursued additional training in naturopathic treatment modalities.9

31
Q

Naturopathic physician

A

-training is similar to the trining of the medical doctor
-3 years of premedical sciences as prerequisites

32
Q

How many universities in the united states and canada offer a ND or doctor of naturopathic medicine

A

5 united states
2 canadian

33
Q

True or False: the NCCIH has reported that both naturopathy and traditional Chinese medicine were effective for treating temporomandibular disorders in woman

A

true

34
Q

True or false: naturopathy is cost-effective

A

true

35
Q

homeo and pathos

A

homeo= similar
pathos= suffering and disease

36
Q

Homeopathy

A

holistic and natural system of healing that aims to prevent illness as well as treat it
-based on the idea that like cures like

37
Q

Three essential principles of homeopathy

A
  1. the principle of similars: like cures like
2.the principle of infinitesimal dose: the more diluted the doe, the more potent its curative efffects
  2. the principle of specificity of the individual: if the remedy is to cure, it must match the symptom profile of the patient
38
Q

Homeopathic treatments

A

minute (diluted) remedies made from animal, vegetable, and mineral substances.

38
Q
A
39
Q

True or false: believe that the energy or vibrational pattern from a homeopathic substance that is contained in the solution stimulates healing by activating the vital force, first identified by Hahnemann.

A

true

40
Q

What does the NCCIH think of the safety of homeopathic remedies

A

generally considered safe and unlikely to cause severe side effects

41
Q

Five essential steps to prescribe a remedy for homeopaths

A

note the symptoms; look up the symptoms; decide which remedy is appropriate; decide the dosage, and how often and when to repeat it; and evaluate the results

42
Q

What is an important principle of homeopathy

A

the whole person should be studied—their temperament, personality, and emotional and physical responses—before prescribing a homeopathic remedy
