Chapter 1: The Science of Nutrition Flashcards
The 6 classes of nutrients include:
carbohydrates, protein, lipids, water, vitamins, minerals
Nutrients can be assigned to 3 functional categories which are:
provide energy, promote growth & development, regulate body processes
Macronutrients and Micronutrients include what?
macro (needed in large amounts) = carbs, protein, lipids, water
micro (needed in small amounts) = vitamins, minerals
Is alcohol a nutrient?
No!!
Kcals of each nutrient:
carbs = 4 kcal proteins = 4 kcal lipids = 9 kcal
Define desirable nutritional status, undernutrition, overnutrition, and malnutrition.
desirable nutritional status = nutrients in normal amounts needed for normal function
undernutrition = nutrient intake doesn’t meet needs
overnutrition = nutrient intake exceeds needs
malnutrition = overnutrition/undernutrition
Describe the 2 types of cohort studies.
prospective = looks in the future retrospective = looks at the past
