Chapter 1- Nociception vs Pain Flashcards
What is the definition of Pain 2020?
An unpleasant sensory or emtoional epxerience associated with or ressembling that associated with that actual or potential tissue damage.
What are the 6 notes for pain?
1- Pain is always a personal experience that is influenced to varying degrees by biological, psychological and social factors
2- Pain and nociception are different phenomena. Pain cannot be inferred solely from activity in sensory neurons
3- Through their life experiences, individuals learn the concept of pain
4- A person’s report of an experience as pain should be respected
5- Although pain usually serves an adaptive role, it may have adverse effects on function and social and psychological well-being
6- Verbal description is only one of several behaviors to express pain: inability to communicate does not negate the possiblity that a human or a nonhuman animal experiences pain
What is nocicpetion?
The neural process of encoding nocious stimuli
Consequences of encoding may be? (2 things) for nociception
1- Behavioural (ex: motor withdrawl reflex)
2- Autonomic (ex: elevated blood pressure)
What are the 2 systems that use nociception?
1- Periphereal nervous system –> sensory neuron (AB and C fibers)
2-Central Nervous System –>
1. Spinal cord (spinothalamic tract)
2. Thalamus (relay station)
3. Somatosensory cortex (homunculus)
What is a noxious stimuli?
A stimulus that is damaging or threatens to damage to normal tissues
Does nociception equal to pain?
NO!
Nociception is an _______ to the brain
Pain is an _______ of the brain
Input - output
Nociception is an INPUT to the brain
Pain is an OUTPUT of the brain
What does the quote say about pain? ( by McCaffrey 1968)
“Pain is what the person says it is and exists whenever he or she or they say it does” -
What is Chronic Pain?
It is pain that has persisted for more than 3 months and knowing that the tissue healing phase is done and it is still there
Is Chronic Pain a neurological Condition?
YES
Is Chronic Pain a symptom?
NO, it is a diagnosis in itself
What is the purpose of Pain?
Pain is a threat detection system.
Purpose of pain is not only to detect threat, but to also motivate protector behaviour (survival)
