Chapter 1- Intro To Bio Flashcards
What is biology?
Biology is the study of life and living organisms
Characteristics of living organisms
- order and organization
- reproduction, growth and development
- acquire and use energy
- regulation (homeostasis)
- respond to external stimuli
- have the capacity to adapt and evolve
Order and organization
Organisms l Organ systems l Organs l Tissues l Cells
Taxonomy
Science or naming and classifying organisms
Organisms are classified into categories (groups)
Domaine Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
Three domaines of life
Archaea, bacteria, eukarya
Domaine archaea
Unicellular, live in extreme environments
Domaine bacteria
Unicellular, found almost everywhere, some cause disease but most are beneficial
Domaine eukarya
Organized into 4 groups:
- fungi
- plantae
- animalia
- protists
Fungi
Most are multicellular heterotrophs (by external ingestion)
Plantae
Multicellular, autotrophs
Animalia
Multicellular, heterotrophs (by ingestion)
Binomial nomenclature
Formal system of naming species
Genus+species
Scientific method
A series of steps used to logically test and explain the natural world
Observation
New observations are made, previous data are studied
Hypothesis
When we try to explain a natural phenomenon
I put from various sources is used to formulate a testable statement
“If…then”
Experiment
Used to test hypotheses
- sample size and variables are important
- independent-conditions you manipulate
- dependent- measured results of the independent
- standardized- variables are held constant
- untreated group is the control
Experiment results
Should be objective (measurable)
Displayed as a graph or table
Conclusion
Analyze the data to determine if hypothesis can be supported. If not, process starts over
Scientific theories
Concepts that join together well-supported and related hypothesis
Broad and supported by a large body of evidence
