Chapter 1: Cells Flashcards
What are the two types of cells and which are human ?
Prokaryotes are plant base no membrane around the indistincted nucleus
Eukaryotes are human and animal based and are more complex than prokaryotes
Each cell has three main elements what are they ?
- cell membrane
- the cytoplasm
- and the organelles
What does the terms permeable and semipermeable mean ?
Means it allows substances to pass from one side to the other but will not allow others to pass
Cytoplasm?
Thick fluid that fills the cell
A)Erythrocytes?
B)Leukocyte?
A)Red blood cells
B)white blood cells
Phagocyte?
Cell that has ability to eat other cells and substances like bacteria and cell debris
Cytokine ?
Protein produced by white blood cells that instructs other cells to respond in a genetically preprogrammed way
Substances dissolved in the cytosol?
Electrolytes,proteins,glucose and lipids
Electrolytes?
Are substances that form ions when they break down or dissociate in water
Diffusion?
Is the tendency of molecules to move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
Osmosis?
The passage of a solvent such as water through a membrane
