Chapter 1 Flashcards
Motor Control
Study of—physical and behavioral movement
Motor Learning
The study of—Learning skilled movements from practice
Motor development
The study of—Neurological and musculoskeletal processes in learning a new skill
Objective: Define Skill
A skill is a motor task or a characteristic of a performance or action.
Objective: Explain the relationship between motor performance and motor learning.
Performance
- observable
- influenced by: motivation, focus, fatigue etc.
Learning
- internal process of how to do it
- stable
- observes others
Objective: Discuss the stages of skill acquisition (aka, learning)
What is meant by a motor skill?
The quality of movement
What are the 3 ways we classify Motor Skills?
Discrete—Single action
Seriel–Discrete movements strung together with a beging and an end
Continuous– no end or begining
What determines the quality of movement?
Motor
Decision-making is minimized when performing the task.
If you overthink it, you mess up.
Cognitive Skill
Decision-making is maxed and the motor is minimized.
Skill development
- Time decreases (movement faster)
- Tasks achieved with more certainty
- You spend less energy performing a task
Closed
A safe and stable environment
Open
An environment that is variable and unpredictable
What is influenced by motivation and fatigue?
Performance
Maximum Certainty
Accuracy on Demand
