Chapter 04.1 - Cognitive Processing & Performance Flashcards
Major components in human cognition
External Sensors -> [Memory (Perceptual + intellectual + movement control) +Motivation] -> Responder
Cognitive Stages
Perception -> Intellection -> Movement control Errors may occur at each stage
Ability
A basic trait of an individual
Skill
A level of proficiency obtained in a specific activity
Perceptual skill
Giving coherence to the sensory data pour in through the sense organs and linking that data to material already stored in memory
Intellectual skill
The efficient linking of perception to an appropriate action based on reasoning, decision making, or problem solving
Movement Control Skill
Movements become highly coordinated (lack of intellect)
Processing Levels
Automatic & Conscious
Errors
Wrong, but similar cues can cause errors. Errors made in the beginning tend to become ingrained. Seek errorless learning
Two level model of human performance processes as related to the stage processing model
Speed and errors
Where performance is automatic, errors will remain constant but speed will increase. Fastest performance comes from performing totally automatic. Guard against unwanted interruptions.
