Chap.7: Particulate Nature of Matter Flashcards
1
Q
Define Brownian Motion
A
The random movement of microscopic particles suspended in liquid or gas
Move constantly in different directions as they constantly bombared into particales that surround them
2
Q
Explain properties of solid ( Particulate nature of matter)
A
- Particles are very closely packed in orderly manner
- Vibrate about fixed positions
- Held together by very strong forces of attraction
- Cannot be compressed ( no space for particles to move closer)
3
Q
Explain properties of liquid ( Particulate nature of matter)
A
- Particles are closely packed in disorderly manner
- Move randomly and slide past each other
- Held by strong forces of attraction
- Have a little space to compress
4
Q
Explain properties of gases ( Particulate nature of matter)
A
- Particles are far apart and disorderly
- Moves randomly and quickly
- held by weak forces of attraction
- Lots of space in between particles
5
Q
How does melting work (Particulate nature of matter)
A
- When heated, particles gain energy
- Vibrates faster
3.Gains enough energy to overcome force of attraction
