Chap.13: Electrical Systems Flashcards
Formula for current
I= Q/T
I=current, Q= charge, t = time
SI unit for curret is Ampere (A)
Define potential difference
The amount of energy needed to move a unit charge from one point to another is known as potential difference (voltage) between two points
Formula for voltage
V=IR
OR
R-V/I
What is resistance?
The electrical resistance, R, of an electrical component is a measure of how much opposes the flow of current
In a series circut, what do 2 ammeters placed at different places in between a resistor give as the reading?
Both will be the same as the same current flows in and out of the resistor
To find potential diff. in a series circut, what is the formula?
V(sum) = v1=v2………..
What is the formula of resistance in a seires circuit?
R(sum)= R1+R2+R3…………
Formula for resistance in parallel
1/R= 1/R1+1/R2……..
What are some useful effects of electricity?
- Chemical effect
- Heating
- Magnetic effect
Describe the chemical effect of electricity
Electrocoating parts to lengthen lifespan of their usage and enhancement with desirable properties
Describe the heating effect with electricity
Heating elements such as nichrome produces heat in household items like hairdryers, toasters etc
Describe the magnetic effect with electricity
When electicity passes through a coil of wire, it becomes a electromagnet
What are some safety devices in household electrical system?
- Fuse
- Circuit Breaker
How does a fuse work?
It limits the maximum amount of current tha flows through the fuse.
If it exceeds, the wire in it will melt and cause a open circuit, therefore will remain safe
Define power
The amount of electrical energy used for conversion to other forms of energy per unit time
