Chap 3: Chemical Composition of Matter Flashcards
Define element
It is the basic building blocks of matter and cannot be broken down into simpler substances
Define compounds
It is made of two or more elements that are chemically combined
Does not have similar properties as its constituent elements
Chemically combined by fixed proportions of mass
Define mixtures
Made up of two or more elements or compounds that are not chemically combined
It has the same properties as its constituent elements, do not have fixed proportions and can be separated easily
What are solutions?
It is a mixture in which one substance completely dissolves in another substance
Solute=Dissolves in solvent
Solvent=Substance solute dissolves in
What are suspentions?
It is a mixture that contains insoluble particles in the solvent
What’s the difference with Solutions and suspentions?
Solution:
1. Solute particles cannot be seen
2. Light passes through fully
3. Solute does not settle to bottom
Suspention:
1. Light cannot pass through fully
2. Insoluble solute settles to the bottom
3. Solute particles visible
