Chap.10: Transfer of Heat energy and its effects Flashcards
What are the 3 different ways of transmitting heat?
- Convection
- Conduction
- Radiation
Define conduction
Conduction is the transfer of heat energy without the physical movement of the medium.
How does conduction work?
Heat is added-> Molecules vibrate stronger-> Knocks neighbouring particles-> Heat is passed on
Define convection
Convection is the transfer of heat from one place to another by the physical movement of a medium. The medium has to be a fluid
Define radiation
It is the transfer of energy from a hotter body to a cooler body without the need for a medium
Conduction of heat in solids is far better than in liquids and gases. Why?
In solids, particles are much closer to each other, therefore heat transfer quicker as they collide easier
Why are metals better conductors of heat?
They contain free electrons; free to travel, spreading kinetic energy when they gain heat and vibrate
