Chap. 12: Interactions with Ecosystems Flashcards
What are some Physical or abiotic factors?
- Air
- Water
- Temperature
- Light
- Minerals
- Acidity/Akalinity
What is an ecosystem?
The interactions between a community and its physical environment
What is an ecosystem made up of?
- Organism- Adapted to the environment
- Population- Organism of the same kind
- Community- Different populations interacting and living in the environment
- Ecosystem- Interactions between a community and its environment
What are the ways of interrelationships in an ecosystem?
- Predator-prey r/s
- Mutualism
- Parasitism
What is mutualism?
R/s in which two or more organisms support and benefit each other
What is parasitism?
Organism that causes harm to the host without killing it
What are the ways the flow of energy and nutrients work in an ecosystem?
- Photosynthesis
- Respiration
- Feeding
Describe photosysnthesis
Process where glucose is produced using carbon dioxide and water in the presence of light
Green plants are producers, as they have chlorophyll found in chloroplasts to trap light
Describe respiration
Process where food substances (Glucose) is broken down in the presence of oxygen to release energy used for growth, and storage as chemical potential energy
What is flow of energy
At each stage, 90% of sun energy is lost through heat, therefore last organism of the food chain/web recieves least energy
Lost energy cannot be reused by produces
Flow of energy is therefore non-cyclical
What is flow of nutrients?
It is passing of nutrients from the produces to decomposers to the environment.
Flow of nutrients in an ecosystem is cyclical
