Describe the three classifications of burns
superficial burn- a burn that involves only the epidermis.
Partial thickness burn- a burn in which the epidermis is burned through and the dermis is damaged.
Full thickness burn- a burn in which all the layers of the skin are damaged
differentiate between a dressing and a bandage.
a dressing is placed directly on the wound, and the bandage holds it together.
Abrasion
road burns, rug burns, road rash, skinned elbows and knees
laceration
cuts
avulsion
flap of skin and tissue that is torn loose or pulled off completely.
An eye pulled out of the socket is considered an avulsion.
minor burn
full thickness burn of less than 2 %
partial thickness burns less than 15%
superficial burns of 50 % of body surface or less
Moderate burn
full thickness - 2-10%
partial thickness burns of 15-30%
superficial burns - more than 50%
Critical burns
All burns complicating respiratory, soft tissue, bones
Partial thickness or full thickness of the face, hands, feeds, genitals, or reps. tract
Full thickness - more than 10%
Partial thickness - more than 15%
Children and Peds Minor burn
partial thickness burn - less than 10%
Children and Peds moderate burn
partial thickness burns - 10-20%
Children and Peds Critical burn
Full thickness burns of any extent
partial thickness - more than 20%
