What is physical development?
Involves changes in the body and various systems
What is social development?
Involves changes in an individual’s relationships with others
What is cognitive development?
Involves changes in an individual’s mental abilities
What is emotional development?
Involves changes in how an individual’s experiences and different feelings
What are the stages of lifespan development?
Infancy - birth to 3 years Childhood - 3 years to 10 years Adolescence - 10 years to 20 years Early Adulthood - 20 years to 40 years Middle Age - 40 years to 65 years Older age - 65 years and beyond
Define maturation
Is a biological sequence of behaviours which occurs at certain ages
Define learning
A permanent change in behaviour due to experience
What are developmental norms?
They indicate the average age that a certain behaviour or skill that will be achieved
What are inborn reflexes?
A set of unlearned automatic responses to certain stimuli that babies are born with
What are critical periods?
A period when certain experiences must happen for normal development to proceed
What are sensitive periods?
Periods in time where an individual learns things due to the nature of the growing brain
What are teratogens?
Any toxic substance that can be harmful to an unborn child
