Ch.1 Research Methods Flashcards
What is the Independent Variable?
The variable that is manipulated by the experimenter which makes changes in the Dependent Variable.
What is the Dependent Variable?
The variable which is measured in research, that depends on the Independent Variable.
What is the Extraneous Variable?
Can cause changes to the in the value of the Dependent Variable.
What is random sampling?
Is a sampling procedure where every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected.
What is stratified sampling?
A sampling process where the effects of a certain variable can be eliminated as a possible confound in an experiment.
What’s the difference between E group and C group?
The difference between a control group and an experimental group is that one group is exposed to the conditions of the experiment and the other is not.
What is the repeated measures design?
A subject selection procedure where each participant is part of both the E group and C group.
What is the matched participants design?
A subject selection procedure which attempts to eliminate confounding variables, by matching on key characteristics.
What is the independent groups design?
Allocates participants to E group or C group at random.
What is the Confounding Variable?
Factors other than IV that can affect the DV; if there is a CV then the research is not valid
