Ch.5 The Brain Flashcards
What is the function of pons?
Is responsible for sleep and arousal and receives information sent from visual areas to control areas to control eye and body actions.
What is the function of the medulla?
It controls many involuntary actions such as breathing, heartbeats and digestion.
What is the function of the recticular formation?
It connects the hindbrain and forebrain that plays an important role in the control of arousal and the sleeping and waking cycle.
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
Plays a major role on controlling emotion and motivated behaviours such as eating, drinking and sexual activity.
What is the function of the thalamus?
A structure which is shaped like two eggs beneath the cortex; is processes incoming information and transmits it to other, higher parts of the brain for further processing.
What is the structure and function of the cerebral cortex?
Is a thin layer covering the cerebrum, it allows us to undertake a range of tasks and is responsible for receiving information from the environment, controlling responses and higher order thinking.
What is the amygdala?
An almond-shaped structure and is important in learning. It is vital in initiating and processing emotional responses and in forming emotional memories.
What is hippocampus?
A finger sized curved structure and it is responsible for consolidation of important memories and transfers these to other parts of the brain for storage as a long term memory.
What does hemispheric specialisation refer to?
It refers to the study of dividing up the brain by separating the two hemispheres.
What is function and structure of the frontal lobe?
It has several functions including movement of the body; language, planning, judgement and problem solving.
What is the function of the parietal lobe?
It receives sensations such as touch, pressure, temperature and pain from the body.
What is the function of the temporal lobe?
It processes sounds and language through the ear.
What is the function of the occipital lobe?
It processes information through the eyes.
What does the hindbrain contain?
Cerebellum
Pons
Medulla
What does the midbrain do?
It connects the forebrain and the hindbrain. contains the reticular formation
