Define mental health
A state of emotional and social well being, where a person can cope with the normal stresses of life and can contribute to their society
Define mental health problems
Problems that cause emotional, cognitive and behavioural difficulties that affect functioning in everyday life
What adaptive behaviours?
Are behaviours or skills developed as we age to assist in our ability to relate to others
What are maladaptive behaviours?
Are behaviours developed in early childhood, which interfere with a person’s ability to function on a daily basis
Define mental disorder
It affects one or more functions of the mind. a mental disorder can interfere with a person’s thoughts, emotion, perceptions and behaviours

External factors that affect mental health

What is the internal locus of control?
People who base their success on their own work and believe they control their life
What is the external locus of control?
People who attribute their success or failure to outside influences
Define eustress
Refers to a positive psychological response to a perceived stressor
Define distress
Refers to a negative psychological response to a perceived stressor
What is psychosis?
A mental illness where there is some loss of contact with reality
What is neurosis?
Refers to nonpsychotic illnesses where a sense of reality remains
