CH.8 Flashcards
monohybrid cross
is a cross between true breeding parent plants that differ in only one character.
monohybrid cross uses and genetic and phenotypic frequencies
monohybrid cross- you’re only looking at one trait (ex: flower color) genetic:alleles phenotypic frequencies- physical apearence
Know what law of dominance is
Mendel discovered .in a hetero zygote, one trait will conceal the presence of another trait for the same characteristic
Ressive traits
what you inherit from your parents that looks a bit different from how your parents look ex: PARENTS : freckles CHILD: no freckles
Know ABO blood grouping
ABO blood grouping are multiple alleles that make up a person’s genes
Rh factor
an inherited protein that can be found on the surface of the red blood cell positive or negative blood group
a mother that is Rh- and a baby is Rh+ is bad. if the Rh+ babys blood cells get into mom her immune system will think they are invaders hence mothers body will create antibodies to cross placenta and iliminate child (permanent brain damage, death)
Know what hemolytic disease of the newborn is and what causes it
It is a blood disorder that causes a baby’s red blood cells to break down quickly, it occurs when the mother and babies blood type are incompatible
Back cross
the mating of a hybrid organism (offspring of genetically unlike parents) with one of its parents or with an organism genetically similar to the parent
Test cross
a test cross is used to determine
the unknown genotype of the
organism expressing the dominant
trait.
