CH.6 Flashcards
1
Q
Know the chromosome anatomy
A
2
Q
Chromatin
A
mixed with DNA and protein that form chromosomes
3
Q
Sister chromatids
A
where the sister chromatids separate becoming separate chromosomes
4
Q
Know the stages of cell cycle
A
(Gap 1)G1- cell growth and normal functions
(synthesis) S - Copies DNA. chromosomes held at centromere
(Gap 2)G2- additional growth and protein synthesis
(Mitosis) M- includes division of the cell nucleus (mitosis) and division of the cell cytoplasm (cytokinesis)
5
Q
Know the stages of mitosis and what happens in each stage
A
Prophase
metaphase
Telophase
Anaphase
6
Q
Prophase
A
- Chromosomes condense and are more visible.
- The nuclear membrane (envelope) disappears.
- Centrioles have separated and taken positions on
the opposite poles of the cell. - Spindle fibers form and radiate toward the center
of the cell.
7
Q
metaphase
A
- Chromosomes line up across the middle of the
cell. - Spindle fibers connect the kinetochore of each
sister chromatid to the poles of the cell.
8
Q
Anaphase
A
- Centromeres that join the sister chromatids split.
- Sister chromatids separate becoming individual
chromosomes. - Separated chromatids move to opposite poles of
the cell.
9
Q
Telophase
A
- Chromosomes (each consisting of a single
chromatid) uncoil. - A nuclear envelope forms around the
chromosomes at each pole of the cell. - Spindle fibers break down and dissolve.
- Cytokinesis begins.
d. Know the outcome of mitosis
Form two different cells that are identical
10
Q
Know how prokaryotes divide
A
Binary Fission because of the speed of bacterial cell division
