CH3-Netwk Topologies/Technologies Flashcards
How data travels from one device to another
Logical topology - common are switched, bus, ring
How an arrangement of cables connect one device to another
Physical topology - common are star, bus, ring, point-to-point, mesh
Connects every device to every other device
Mesh Topology - provides multiple pathways incase of failure
Cabling a direct connection between 2 devices for a wireless bridge in WAN’s
Point-to-point topology -
Can occur when 2 devices on the same medium transmit simultaneously
Collision - when CSMA/CD media access method is used
Access method used by WiFi
CSMA/CA (Carrier sense multiple access)/(collision avoidance) - media access method where an acknowledgement is required for every packet sent,
Devices on a network must listen first before transmitting and retransmit at a random time later
CSMA/CD (Carrier sense multiple access)/collision detection) - all devices wait for a random time before resending
Set of rules governing how and when the network medium can be accessed for transmission
Media access method - ensures the transmissions are sent/received in an orderly fashion and everyone gets to transmit.
Uses an analog signal to send multiple signals simultaneously
Broadband - each signal has a frequency and is a channel allowing multiples on a single wire
Sends a digital signal using the entire bandwidth using each bit represented as a pulse
baseband - signals sent at a fixed frequency
