An elected official who presides over the state senate, determines which bills are considered, appoints committee chairs, and serves on the state budget committee.
lieutenant governor
A political system whereby major executive officers are elected independent of the governor.
plural executive
Agency that regulates utility companies; appointed.
Public Utility Commission (PUC)
The state’s chief election officer; appointed by the governor.
secretary of state
Elected board that oversees the Texas Education Agency.
State Board of Education (SBOE)
Appointed joint commission that reviews state agencies.
Sunset Advisory Commission
State commission that oversees oil and gas production; elected.
