Persons who cannot vote, or who believe their votes don’t count.
disenfranchised
Occurs when citizens believe there are too many elections, and thus fail to vote.
election burnout
The process through which officeholders are elected from among party nominees.
general election
The election for governor and other executive offices.
gubernatorial election
Laws enacted to deny equal rights to African Americans.
Jim Crow
A system under which many officials are up for election at the same time.
long ballot
General elections in non-presidential years.
off-year elections
Exists when a candidate has more votes than any other candidate, even if the total is less than 50 percent.
plurality
A tax paid for registering to vote (this tax no longer exists).
poll tax
The process through which major parties choose their nominees for the general election.
primary election
The process of drawing district lines to dilute minority voting strength.
racial gerrymandering
U.S. Supreme Court case that overturned the white primary.
Smith v. Allwright
An election held to fill a vacancy, ratify a state constitutional amendment, or approve a local bond issue.
pecial election
Percentage of registered voters who cast ballots.
turnout
The concept that holds that virtually all adult citizens (felons and undocumented immigrants are excluded) have the right to vote.
