Ch 9 Flashcards
Minute volume
The amount of air moved into and out of the lungs per minute
MV=TV•RR
Ventilations
The process of breathing in and out or artificial provisions of breaths
Dead air space
The remaining air that occupies the trachea, bronchioles, and other parts of the airway
Acrobat ventilation
The amount of air that reaches the alveoli
Diffusion
Movement of gases from high to low concentration area
Pulmonary respiration
Diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide that takes place between the alveoli and the circulationg blood
Cellular respirations
The diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide that takes place between the cells and circulating blood
Mechanical failures in the cardiopulmonary system
Mechanics of breathing disrupted, gas exchange interrupted, circulation issues
Respiration
Exchange of gases between the alveoli and the blood and between the blood and cells
Hypoxia
Low levels of oxygen
Major causes of hypoxia
Patient is trapped in a fire
Patient has emphysema
Pt. OD’s on drug that has a depressing effect on the respiratory system
Patient has a heart attack
Respiratory distress
Increased work of breathing; sensation of SOB
Respiratory failure
Reduction of breathe to the point where hypoxia gets to the extent where it cannot support life
Respiratory arrest
When breathing completely stops
Assess breathing
Look listen feel
Cyanosis
Bluish coloration of the skin in response to the lack of oxygen in the body
Artificial ventilation aka positive pressure ventilation
Is FORCING air or oxygen into the lungs when a pt. has stopped breathing or has inadequate breathing
Negative sides to artificial ventilation
Decreasing cardiac output/dropping blood pressure
Gastric distention
Hyperventilation
Pocket face mask
A device used for mouth to mouth to aid in artificial ventilation
BVM
A handheld ventilation device
Cricoid pressure
Applying firm backward pressure to the cricoid ring in the pt.’s neck
Stoma
A surgical opening in the neck through which the pt. breathes
Flow restricted oxygen-powered ventilation device (FROPVD) aka manually triggered ventilation device
Oxygen under pressure to deliver artificial ventilations through a mask placed over the pt.s face
