Standard of care
the care that would be expected to be provided by an EMT with similar training when caring for a pt. in a similar situation
Scope of practice
A set of regulations and ethical considerations that define the scope, or extent and limits of the EMT’s job
Consent
Permission from the pt. for care or other action by the EMT
Expressed consent
Consent that are given by adults who are of age and mentally competent to make a rational decision in regard to their medical well-being
Implied consent
In case of unconscious pt., consent may be assumed
in loco parentis
Another form of authority giving consent for the pt. while the parents are not present
Ex: school authority
Liability
Being held legally responsible
Assault
Placing a person in fear of bodily harm
Battery
Causing bodily harm to or restraining a person
DNR Order
Is a legal documentation stating not to resuscitate pt.
Advance directive
A DNR order; instructions written in advance of an event
Negligence
Something that should have been done was not done or was done incorrectly
Tort
A civil offense
Res ipsa loquitur
Latin term meaning “the thing speaks for itself.”
Duty to act
An obligation to provide care to a pt.
Abandonment
Leaving pt. after initiated care and or left before transferring a pt. to someone equal or higher than you
Moral
Regarding personal standards or principals of right or wrong
Ethical
Regarding a professional expectations for applying principals of right or wrong
Good Samaritan laws
To provide immunity to individuals trying to help people in emergencies
