Education
A social institution through which a society passes on cultural values and norms as well as skills related to social interaction and productivity
Residential Schools
An assimilationist tool to fundamentally destroy Indigenous peoples’ culture and family structure, while indoctrinating children into Eurocentric values, norms, and beliefs.
Manifest Education
Intended lessons transmitted through formal education (e.g., curricula and lesson plans)
Latent Education
Unintended lessons transmitted through formal education (e.g., routines and practices)
Rationalization
(Max Weber) The process by which decisions in modern society have become more strongly guided by reason and practicality over traditions and customs
Standardization
A process whereby procedures are developed based on standards that are agreed on through a consensus form different parties
Hidden Curriculum
(latent education) Unintended things we are taught in school
Stereotype threat
When an individual’s academic performance is hindered due to their fear of confirming a negative stereotype they believe others hold about their racial or gender group
Credentialism
The belief that academic or other formal qualifications are the best measure of aptitude
