Family (in terms of sociology)
The most basic social unit, or institution.
Census family
A household made up of a married couple, a common-law couple, or a single parent and their children
Primary socialization
The process of learning social norms, values, and behaviours during childhood
Secondary socialization
The process of learning how to behave in society outside of the family
- Occurs as an individual enters new contexts and roles
The Sixties Scoop
An historical phase (mainly 1960s – 1980s) characterized by the mass removal of Indigenous children from their families into the child welfare system, in most cases without the consent of their families or bands.

Anticipatory socialization
The process of adopting the values and behaviours of a group that someone wants to join
Ossification
A process whereby roles, over time, harden into parts of our self-concept
- Made by the interactions with significant others
Resocialization
The process of changing a person’s values, beliefs, and behaviours by learning new norms and discarding old ones
Total institutions
A place where people live and work in isolation from society, following strict rules set by an authority
- Intended to profoundly change our roles and sense of self through an abrupt resocialization process.
Plastic sexuality
Sexuality that is shaped by individual preferences and social norms.
Institutional lag
The delay in the development or adaptation of societal rules, laws, and institutions in response to rapid changes in families and society as a whole.
Skip-generation families
A family where grandparents raise grandchildren without the parents present
Blended families
A family formed when two people come together and combine their children from previous relationships
Intergenerational transmission of (dis)advantage
Occurs when family capital is passed from older to younger generations
