Ch. 7 Flashcards
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue
Skeletal tissue
Cardiac tissue
Smooth tissue
What kind of fibers are in skeletal muscle and what are their functions?
Fast fibers and slow fibers.
Fast Fibers:
Large diameter fibers, immediate response, Large glycogen reserves, Relatively few mitochondria, Extreme power, but not much endurance
Slow Fibers
Smaller fibers, contains myoglobin, higher concentration of mitochondria, capable of continued contraction
What are the functions of cardiac muscle?
Cardiac muscle cells branch and connect at intercalated disks.
Cardiac cells contract without neural stimulation
Cannot undergo tetanus (cramping)
Large supply of mitochondria
What are the characteristics of smooth muscle?
Found in almost every organ
Form sheets, bundles or sheaths around other tissues
Lack myofibril, sarcomeres, and striations
Use calcium differently
Capable of contracting over a larger range
What are the functions of muscle?
Produce movement
Maintain posture and body position
Support the soft tissues
Guard entrances/exits
Maintain body temperature
