(Karen Horney) theory of personality that emphasizes cultural influence in shaping both normal and neurotic development
- similar to Freud but not as biased against females + input social aspects
- emphasize importance of human relationships

repressed feelings of rage that originate during childhood when parents do not satisfy child’s needs for safety and satisfaction

MAIN CONCEPT
a feeling of being isolated and helpless in a world conceived as potentially hostile
a feeling of being small, insignificant, helpless, deserted, endangered, in a world that is out to abuse, cheat, attack, humiliate, betray, cheat
**repressed hostility (basic hostility) leads to feelings of insecurity and apprehension
