the way people tend to organize their “scripts” including: physical characteristics, social roles, interactions, psychological characteristics and memberships
RECIPROCITY OF INTERACTIONS
in an interaction assume that the point of view of the other is similar to their own, “fix it” mentality about Deaf
AMBIVALENCE
the state of having contradictory or conflicting emotional attitudes about oneself due to society’s view of deafness as deficit
3 TYPES OF OPPRESSION
individual, group, institutional
PATHOLOGICAL VIEW OF DEAF PEOPLE
viewed as disabled and in need of being fixed
CULTURAL VIEW OF DEAF PEOPLE
deaf individuals are normal, capable
CAN OPPRESSED PEOPLE BE LIBERATED BY THE POWER GROUP OR MUST THEY LIBERATE THEMSELVES
they must liberate themselves
FATALISM
passively taking whatever happens, sensing you can do nothing to change things
HORIZONTAL VIOLENCE
Involves conflictual behaviors among individuals who consider themselves peers with equal power but with little power within the system. Members of an oppressed group taking violence out on one another
PEJORATIVE VIEW OF THE MINORITY GROUP
feel that being different than the “ideal” (fat, poor, blind, etc.) is bad
