Ch 5 Flashcards
Where do you have thick skin?
Hands, feet. Hairless areas, no sebaceous oil, yes sweat glands
Where is thin skin?
Covers most of body. Hairy, sebaceous oil, sweat glands.
6 Functions of skin
Resistance to trauma and infection, water retention, synthesis of vitamin d, sensation, thermoregulation, nonverbal communication.
Which layer of skin is connective tissue?
Dermis
Which layer of skin is associated but not directly part of skin
Hypodermis
Which layer of skin is epithelium?
Epidermis
What is epidermis maid of?
Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
What is the first layer of cells in the epidermis called?
Stratum Basale. It is right above the basement membrane. Melanocytes!
Second layer of epidermis?
Stratum Spinosum. Dendritic cells! a little thicker.
third layer of epidermis
Stratum Granulosum. Has granules
Fourth Layer of epidermis
Stratum Lucidum. Only in loose skin (toes heals etc).
Fifth layer of epidermous?
Corneum. Dying cells. Very squished from all the keratin.
First layer of dermis?
Papillary (nippppple). Region w blood vessle.
Layer of dermis underneath the papillary layer?
Reticular. not good blood supply like the papillary. 4/5ths of the dermis. Dense irregular connective tissue.
What is Eumelanin?
Brown black pigment
What is pheomelanin?
White red pigement in skin
Does the number of melanocytes differ across individuals?
No. Skin tone vary due to type and distribution of melanin.
What is Cyanosis?
blue. Not enough oxygen
Erythema?
Increased blood flow
Pallor
Not pink eye lids. Decreased blood flow
Albinism
Adosomal recessive genetic mutation. Melanocytes don’t produce pigmentation.
Jaundice
Not fully functioning livers so bilirubin isn’t disposed of. yellow. loss of red blood cells?
Hematoma
Collection of blood underneath the skin. Trauma
What does Medulla mean?
Center of an organ
What does cortex mean?
circle around the medulla
What are cutaneous glands?
Apocrine glands
Puberty glands…pheromones, sweat glands, pubic hair
Eccrine (Merocrine)
All the other sweat glands(nonpuberty).Sweat glands the function in evaporative cooling
Sebaceous Glands
OILLLL. Produce sebum. open to a pore or hair follicle
Ceruminous glands
glands in external ear so ur ear doesn’t dry out or get too dirty
Mammary gland
lactation pregnancy etc
