Ch 17 Flashcards

1
Q

Functions of the circulatory system

A

Transport (respiratory gases, nutrients, wastes, hormones, stem cells), Protection (clotting prevents blood loss, immune defense ), Regulation (balancing of fluid levels, pH, temperature)

Q

What is the function of erythrocytes? What are they filled with? Why are they discoid shaped?

A

Carry O2 and CO2. Hemoglobin (which binds O2). Because they have ejected all their organelles.

14
Q

What could cause anemia?

A

inadequate synthesis of red blood cells (kidney failure, iron0deficiency), hemorrhagic anemias from bleeding, hemolytic anemias from RBC destruction

15
Q

So what happens if ur anemic?

A

hard to get oxygen to ur body. blood osmolarity reduced so water stays in tissue, blood viscosity is low so blood pressure drops

Q

What are leukocytes?

A

White blood cells. Least abundant of the formed elements.

17
Q

What are the two types of leukocytes

A

Agranulocytes: lymphocytes and monocytes. Granulocytes: neutrophils (S or C), eosinophils (sun glasses), and basophils (bunch of granules)
