Ch 17 Flashcards
Functions of the circulatory system
Transport (respiratory gases, nutrients, wastes, hormones, stem cells), Protection (clotting prevents blood loss, immune defense ), Regulation (balancing of fluid levels, pH, temperature)
What is plasma
the fluid part of blood. Clear, extracellular fluid.
What are the formed elements
Cells and cell fragments, erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets
What is hematocrit?
percentage of red blood cells in ur blood.
What is serum
part of blood plasma without the solids and clots.
Facts about plasma
92 %water
What are some proteins found in blood?
albumins (regulates the amount of whater in ur blood), globulins, fibrinogen, enzymes, etc
What nutrients can be transported in the blood
glucose, amino acids, lactic acids, lipids
What nitrogenous wastes are in ur blood?
urea
What is the function of erythrocytes? What are they filled with? Why are they discoid shaped?
Carry O2 and CO2. Hemoglobin (which binds O2). Because they have ejected all their organelles.
What type of cells determines your blood type.
Erythrocytes! Molecules on the cell membrane.
Which blood types doesn’t have antigens on the membrane surface?
Type O that’s why it’s a universal donor
What is anemia
anything causing a deficiency in the number of red blood cells or hemoglobin.
What could cause anemia?
inadequate synthesis of red blood cells (kidney failure, iron0deficiency), hemorrhagic anemias from bleeding, hemolytic anemias from RBC destruction
So what happens if ur anemic?
hard to get oxygen to ur body. blood osmolarity reduced so water stays in tissue, blood viscosity is low so blood pressure drops
