Gout is caused by?
build up of uric acid crystals mainly in the joints
Gout symptoms?
inflammation, pain, redness, stiffness, swelling
Uric acid is a byproduct of?
Purine metabolism (adenine and guanine)
Risk factors of gout?
male, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption (beer), hypertension, CKD, lead intoxication, advanced age, and drugs
how to reduce risk fo gout?
avoid organ meats, high-fructose corn syrup and alcohol, sweets, lamb, pork
medications that increase uric acid? (D,N,A,P,C,T,R)
diuretics, niacin, high dose aspirin, pyrazinamide, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, ribavirin
drug class used to treat acute gout attack?
NSAID, systemic steroid, or oral colchicine
What are patients at risk of if colchicine is used with: cyclosporin, diltiazem, verapamil, gemfibrozil and statin
myopathy and rhabdomyolysis
