tundra
65 degrees north; coldest biome; permafrost; minimal precipitation
alpine
similar to tundra WITHOUT permafrost; temps more variable; thin atmosphere (mountain regions)
Taiga
cool moist forest; occur 50 to 65 degrees north; short summers bring rain; conifers; acidic soil
Temperate Coniferous Forest
Occur below 50 degrees in North America; north japan, europe, continental parts of asia; conifers; less precipitation
Deciduous Forest
Moderate climate; 15-25 tree species; moderate temp and precipitation
Temperate Grassland
midwest US; blue-stem and buffalo-grasses; maintained by fire; lack of precipitation
Desert
north and south of the equator from 25 degrees to 35 degrees; very little precip
Chaparral
occurs on western edges of continents from 32 degrees to 40 degrees north to south of the equator; precipitation ranges (not a lot of precip)
Savanna
tall, perennial grasses dominant; eastern Africa, southern south africa, and australia; rain is seasonal; maintained by fire
tropical rain forest
most diverse terrestrial; extends north and south of the equator from 10 degrees north to 10 degrees south; lots of precip and high temps
