A surgically created permanent opening into the body, as with a tracheostomy, colostomy, or ileostomy

A device that breathes for a patient
Ventilator
A device implanted under the skin with wires implanted into the heart to modify the heart rate as needed to maintain an adequate heart rate
Pacemaker
A device implanted under the skin of the chest to detect any life-threatening dysrhythmia and deliver a shock to defibrillate the heart
Automatic implanted cardiac defibrillator (AICD)
An external defibrillator worn by a patient to detect any rapid life-threatening dysrhythmia and deliver a shock to defibrillate the heart
Wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD)
A battery-powered mechanical pump implanted in the body to assist a failing ventricle in pumping blood
Ventricular assist device
A tube used to provide delivery of nutrients to the stomach; may be inserted through the nose or surgically implanted through the abdominal wall
Feeding tube
A tube inserted into the bladder through the urethra to drain urine from the bladder
Urinary catheter
An external pouch that collects fecal matter diverted from the colon or ileum through a surgical opening (colostomy or ileostomy) in the abdominal wall
