Ch 20 Cardiac Emergencies Flashcards
The heart and the blood vessels
Cardiovascular system
A blanket term used to represent any symptoms related to lack of oxygen (ischemia) in the heart muscle; also called cardiac compromise
Acute coronary syndrome (ACS)
Another name for acute coronary syndrome
Cardiac compromise
Shortness of breath; labored or difficult breathing
Dyspnea
Slow heart rate, usually less than 60 beats per minute
Bradycardia
Fast heart rate, more than 100 beats per minute
Tachycardia
Diseases that affect the arteries of the heart
Coronary artery disease
Signs of acute coronary syndrome (usually chest pain) occurring when blood supply to the heart is reduced and a portion of the heart muscle is not receiving enough oxygen
Angina pectoris
A medication that dilates the blood vessels
Nitroglycerin
Blockage, as of an artery, by fatty deposits
Occlusion
A clot formed of blood and plaque attached to the inner wall of an artery or vein
Thrombus
Blockage of a vessel by a clot or foreign material brought to the site by the blood current
Embolism
The condition in which a portion of the myocardium dies as a result of an occlusion; often called a heart attack by laypersons
Acute myocardial infarction (AMI)
A disturbance in heart rate and rhythm
Dysrhythmia
The failure of the heart to pump blood with normal efficiency
Heart failure aka congestive heart failure (CHF)
Accumulation of fluid in the feet or ankles
Pedal edema
Accumulation of fluid in the lungs
Pulmonary edema
The dilation (ballooning) of a weakened section of the wall of an artery
Aneurysm
