Where should an officer conduct an inventory of a vehicle being impounded for evidence ?
From outside of the vehicle, to document things of value that are in plain view.
If the vehicle is part a CID or District level investigative case, where should be the vehicle taken to ?
Evidence bay unless otherwise directed
How long after an evidence impound do you have to contact teletype ?
1 hour
A motor vehicle involved in an accident shall be impounded if it cannot be driven and ?
Vehicle creates a hazard
All persons having custodial interest in vehicle have left the scene.
VIN violations ?
Vehicles with missing, altered/questionable VINs, those not displaying a public VIN shall be impounded for inspection by an auto theft investigator.
Vehicles on private properties ?
Generally are not permitted to impound vehicles from private properties. It is the responsibility of the property owners to have the vehicles removed. Officer shall direct the property owners to contact DER.
When should a vehicle be impounded if it is being operated by someone with diplomatic immunity ?
Only if requested to do so
If the vehicle creates a hazard whether safety or traffic, what shall the officer do ?
-request dispatcher to call a crane to move the vehicle to the closest available parking space
-complete incident report
Forward 88 to district commander and TCU
Vehicles on the Woodrow wilson bridge ?
Officers shall immediately impound disabled or abandoned vehicles from the Woodrow wilson bridge to prevent or alleviate congestion. These impounds are authorized regardless of political jurisdiction or location on the bridge.
Acceptable documentation for vehicle releases ?
Certificate of title
Current registration
Notarized power of attorney
If a vehicle is obviously inoperable and has been unattended on public property for more than 48 hours or is in violation of the abandoned vehicle law. What shall the officer do ?
Affix abandoned motor vehicle violation notice sticker (green sticker) to the drivers window
Complete abandoned vehicle log and fax to DER vehicle Audit unit
Cases of repossessions ?
Secured party must obtain a Writ of replevin. If the writ is produced and the vehicle is readily accessed, the secured party may take possession of the vehicle. If the dispute cannot be resolved, they shall be referred to the PG sheriffs for assistance.
Board of education vehicle ?
Officers impounding a board of education vehicle will request a board of education wrecker. If impractical, a contract tow service shall be requested.
