Leadership
the ability to influence the behaviour of others to accomplish some goal
Leadership style
the way that a leader achieves this influence
Two main leader ship styles
Task or goal oriented
Relations oriented
Task or goal oriented leadership style
High concern for the goal
Tend to behave in a more dictatorial, bureaucratic fashion
Referred to as vertical leadership (top down approach)
Relations oriented leadership style
Greater concern for people
Behave more democratically
Effectiveness of a leadership style depends on
Characteristics of leaders Characteristics of followers Leader's interpersonal relationship with followers Type of project Nature and environment of work
Variables which most affects a leader’s influence
1) Acceptance or rejection of leader from the work group
2) Complexity of the task
3) Level of authority of leader
Situational leadership weighs the interplay of
1) Amount of direction and guidance a leader gives –> task behaviour
2) Amount of socio-emotional support he gives –> relations behaviour
3) Readiness of followers to perform the task –> maturity
Participative Leadership Style
Team members are able but unwilling to work
Leader facilitates, supports and communicates with followers
Shares decision making with them
Delegating Leadership Style
Team members are able and willing to work
Leader identifies the problem or goal, then delegates to followers reponsibility for solving the problem and determining how to implement it
