CH. 14 - The Human in the Cockpit Flashcards
What usually causes hyperventilation in pilots?
Emotional tension, anxiety, or fear.
What symptoms can hyperventilation induce?
Drowsiness, tingling of fingers, nausea, and a feeling of suffocation.
What are some techniques to reduce hyperventilation in flight?
Breathing into a paper bag, talking out loud, or singing.
What is hypoxia?
Deficiency of oxygen in the body.
What causes hypoxic hypoxia?
Insufficient oxygen available, often due to high altitude.
What is hypemic hypoxia caused by?
Blood’s inability to transport oxygen, such as from carbon monoxide poisoning.
What is stagnant hypoxia and its common cause in flight?
Inability of blood to move, commonly due to high G-forces.
What causes histotoxic hypoxia?
Cells’ inability to use oxygen, often due to alcohol or drugs.
Name three symptoms of hypoxia.
Headache, tunnel vision, cyanosis (bluish skin).
What should you do if you experience hypoxia while flying?
Descend to a lower altitude immediately.
How can CO2 poisoning lead to hypoxia in a cockpit?
By exhaust fumes entering the cabin.
What should you do if you suspect CO2 poisoning in flight?
Open vents and windows, and land as soon as practicable.
