Ch. 14 Flashcards
Symbiosis
Organisms living together
2 most common super kingdoms
- Firmicutes
* Bacteroides
Good normal microbiota do:
- Prevent overgrowth (Competitive exclusion)
- Break down carbs
- Make vitamins (EX: K)
Types of microbes of normal microbiota:
- Bacteria
- Fungi
- Protozoa
Commensalism
- One of the organisms benefit and the other is unaffected.
* Many that make up our normal microbiota are commensals
Mutualism
Type of symbiosis that benefit both organisms.
Parasitism
One organism benefits by deriving nutrients from the other
Opportunistic pathogen’s
Do not cause disease and their normal habitat in a healthy person but do in a different environment. Some are commensals and some are not
Prevent overgrowth
Competitive exclusion
Begins with an outbreak. Spreads at a rapid speed so we need to try and contain it.
Epidemic Disease
Disease that spread from host to host. Directly or indirectly.
Ex: Flu, arbovirus
Communicable Disease
An epidemic disease worldwide.
Ex: Seasonal flu, AIDS
Pandemic Disease
KPC
Klebsiella Pneumoniae Carbapenemase
Common virus in a hospital
Norovirus: food borne, dry vomit (stomach flu)
