What are the 3 characteristics of art in small-scale societies?
Portability. The societies that produce it are more mobile
Aesthetic standards are more implicit. The history of western art is extensively standardized, and thus orthodoxic. There are rules in place. We categorized types of painting, etc.
It’s egalitarian, in that it’s not something controlled by the elite in small-scale societies.
What are the 4 functions of art?
Emotional Gratification: Art always requires an audience to be art. Someone needs to be affected by it. When we see art, we feel something. Anything. Art provides that brief moment of reprieve from the general struggles of day-to-day life.
Social Integration: There is a collective aspect with art. Art serves to help society function. Art communicates a good deal about the values, beliefs, and ideologies of the culture
Social Control: To reinforce the existing sociocultural system and serve as a mechanism of social control. Instilling obedience and maintaining the status quo.
Preserving/ Challenging the Status Quo: Accumulation of art objects indicates high prestige. It preserves the status quo. Art acts as a vehicle for protest, resistance, and even revolution
The study of the relationship between music and other aspects of culture
Ethnomusicology
Intentional, rhythmic, nonverbal body movements that are culturally patterned and have aesthetic value
Dance
Forms of art that include painting and drawing on various surfaces
Graphic Arts
Artistic expression that involves molding certain forms, such as sculpture
Plastic Arts
