Ch. 12 Flashcards
Peripheral Nervous System
Conjunctiva
Mucous membrane lining inner surface of eyelid and acts as protective covering for exposed surface of eye
Choroid
Dark brown vascular membrane inside the sclera, continuous with the iris and the ciliary body on anterior surface of eye
Optic disk
Region of eye where optic nerve meets retina, lacks light receptors and therefore causes blind spot
Daltonism
Sex linked disorder causing weakness in perceiving colors distinctly
Achromatic vision
Inability to see any color at all
Dacry(o)
Pertaining to tears
Kerat(o)
Pertaining to cornea
Presby(o)
Pertaining to old or old age
Snellen chart
A chart for measuring visual acuity
Tonometry
Measure of intraocular pressure using a tonometer
Mydriatic
Agent that dilates the pupil
Fluorescein angiography
Use of fluorescent dye to study movement of blood through vessels in the eye
Presbyopia
Hyperopia impairment of vision due to advancing years or old age
Hyperopia
Farsightedness, inability of eyes to focus on nearby objects
Myopia
Nearsightedness, inability of eyes to focus on far away objects
Astigmatism
Uneven focusing of an image resulting from distortion in curvature of lens or cornea
Ambylopia/strabismus
Reduced vision in one eye, also known as lazy eye or cross eye
Cataract
Abnormal progressive condition of the lens characterized by loss of transparency
Dacryocystitis
Inflammation of the lacrimal sac caused by obstruction of the lacrimal ducts
Glaucoma
Abnormal condition of increased pressure in the eye, prolonged pressure can damage retina or optic nerve
Hordeolum
Stye, resulting from infected sebaceous gland of the eyelash
Macular degeneration (MD)
Progressive deterioration of the retina associated with new vessel formation that can progress to blindness
Nyctalopia
Poor vision at night or in dim light
Photophobia
Excessive sensitivity of eyes to light
Blepharoplasty
Surgical repair of the eyelid to repair ptosis
Opthalmic cryosurgery
Use of extreme cold to remove a cataract or to cause edges of detached retina to heal
LASIK abbreviation
Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis
Intraocular lens transplant
Replacing the lens with an artificial one
Cerumen
Brown waxy substance that lubricates and protects the ear
Auditory/eustachin tube
Leads from middle ear to pharynx, equilizes middle ear pressure to atmospheric pressure
Myring(o)
Pertaining to ear drum
Salping(o)
Eustachian tube
Anotia
Congenital absence of one or both ears
Tinnitis
Noise in the ears
Meniere disease
Chronic disease of inner ear with recurring episodes of hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo
Ceruminolytics
Medications used to soften or breakdown earwax
Tympanostomy
Creation of an opening through the eardrum
Noc(i)
Pertaining to harm, injury, or pain
Neuropathy
Disease or degeneration of peripheral nerves
-Osmia
Pertaining to sense of smell
