What are the 5 purposes of Close Order Drill?
-Move, Provide, Teach, Increase, and Give
Describe each of the Close Order Drill purposes?
- Move: move unit from one place to another in a orderly manner
- Provide: simple formations from which combat formations may be readily assumed.
- Teach: instilling habits or precision and automatic response to orders.
- Increase: confidence of Junior Officers and NCO”s through exercise of command
- Give: opportunity to handle individual weapons
What is a Element?
-individual, squad,section,platoon,company, or other unit which is part of a larger unit.
What is a Formation?
-arrangement of elements on line,in column, or any other prescribed manner
What is a Line?
-formation in which the elements are abreast
What is a Rank?
-line of Marines or vehicles place side by side
What is a Column?
-formation in which elements are place one behind the other
What is a File?
-single column of Marines or vehicles behind the other
What is Flank?
-right or left extremity of a unit either in a line or column
What is a Interval?
-lateral space between elements on the same line, interval is measured from shoulder to shoulder
What is a Normal Interval?
-1 arm’s length between individuals
What is a Close Interval?
-distance between shoulder and elbow when the left hand is placed on the left hip

-dressing of several elements on a straight line
What is a Guide?
-individual (BASE) upon whom a formation regulates its march

-length of full step, 30” from the back of one heel to the back of another heel
